Dr. Willie Jolley and Dee Taylor-Jolley on the Inspiration Behind Their Book

Our son really pushed us to write this book because all of his friend’s parents fought and they didn’t believe that his parents got along so well. On our 30th anniversary, we just invited a lot of people over to eat pizza. We just started having a conversation and giving tips. That is kind of how the idea for the book got started.

[00:13:25]

Top Issues that Break Up Marriages

Sex, money, and bad communication are some of the main reasons marriages never survive. Those are the three big boulders – the three big bombs that blow up a marriage. Typically a man and woman want the same thing but how they get it is different.  You have to respect one another and never try to control the other person.

[00:16:16]

The Impact of a Woman Disrespecting a Man

Since men are more masculine this can really be a big issue and be taken very personally. When a woman disrespects a man it is like death by a thousand little cuts.

It’s the tone of your voice, how you look when you talk to the person – you can have an uncomfortable conversation or difficult conversations without hitting below the belt. You have to learn how to disagree respectfully in different situations.

[00:23:37]

This Book Applies to any Kind of Interaction

Everyone should get a copy of this book as it really can apply to anybody. If you would like to have better human interaction than this book is for you. This book can have a great impact on business owners.

There are a lot of principles that are taken from the business community. A lot of people know me because I speak to businesses like GM, Walmart, Verizon, Chevron, and I speak to Johnson & Johnson as well.

[00:27:26]

How to Listen and Not Just Talk

Talking is very much different than communicating. When you communicate which is a choice, you have to stop talking to open up your ears and listen.

You’re not listening to hurry up and get your point across your listening to make sure that you understand what your partner is saying. Then when they finish talking you need to be able to summarize what they just said.

This will let them know that you were actually paying attention and listening to them. Once the confirmation of that is there that allows you to take some of the emotion from what they were saying. Finally, you should be able to provide a thoughtful answer.

[00:35:54]

How to Find The Right Partner

If you want to search for the right mate – be friends first and if you see drama in the very beginning don’t stick around.

If there is trouble right out of the gate that would be your first red flag for a long and bumpy road ahead.

A lot of times people are so hopeful and think they’re in love that they think that they can change the other person.

The first thing you should realize is that you can never change somebody else and people are who they are.

[00:42:33]

Hope for the Hopeless

We’ve had so many couples who are on their way to divorce court – read the book and made a u-turn.

You can really do your friends a favor by buying them a copy of the book as a gift if they are having marital problems.

If they don’t have a positive role model to learn from the book serves as a positive role model.

Many people may have come from a broken family and don’t even have that positive outlook on relationships.

Don’t hesitate to ask questions over at Jolleymarriage.com and we will definitely respond back.

We have a very popular Sirius XM show and once a quarter we answer your questions from the book. The two ways to get to any goal is mentors and mistakes.

Both will get you there – one just gets you there with less headache and one knocks you upside your head.

If you don’t have the book, get the book and the lessons that are in it over at Jolleymarriage.com which also comes with a free chapter.
